An accurate 3D site surface is one of the most critical first steps in any BIM workflow. Whether you are designing stepped foundations, checking retaining walls, or analysing cut-and-fill volumes, flat 2D site plans lead to costly mistakes on site.

Archicad's built-in **Mesh Tool** handles 3D topography natively, but uncleaned point clouds and manually traced contours produce bloated files, sluggish navigation, and inaccurate levels. This guide shows you **how to import terrain into Archicad** using clean XYZ data, how to handle real-world coordinates and the Survey Point, and how to keep your site model fast.

\---

## Why Import Elevation Points Instead of 2D Contours?

Importing raw point data (XYZ or TXT) offers three advantages over tracing contours:

1. **Higher vertical precision** — LiDAR and official survey points carry real X, Y, Z coordinates without the rounding errors of traced contours.
2. **Lighter geometry** — Triangulating directly from points lets you control node density, avoiding redundant polygon faces from spline contours.
3. **True DTM representation** — Digital Terrain Model data reflects bare-earth surface, eliminating tree canopy and temporary structures.

\---

## File Formats Archicad Supports for Terrain Import

| Format | Import Method | Use Case | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **.TXT / .XYZ** | \`File > Interoperability > Place Mesh from Surveyors' Data\` | LiDAR grids, DTM data, spot levels | | **.CSV** | Rename to \`.xyz\` first, then use the same command | Spreadsheet-exported point data | | **.DWG / .DXF** | \`File > Interoperability > Merge\` | Surveyor 2D/3D CAD site plans | | **.IFC** | \`File > Interoperability > Merge\` or Hotlink | BIM files with \`IfcSite\` |

### A Note on CSV Files

Archicad's file browser for the surveyors' data command only filters for \`.txt\` and \`.xyz\`. **If your data was exported as \`.csv\` from Excel or QGIS, rename it to \`.xyz\` before importing.** The parser handles the separators fine, but the dialog won't show \`.csv\` files at all.

One quirk: Archicad **fails to parse** any file that uses the same character as both field separator and decimal marker. Danish or Icelandic exports with commas for both (\`524310,50, 181200,25, 42,50\`) will not import. Use periods for decimals, or switch to tabs or semicolons, before renaming.

## Pre-Import Checklist

### 1\. Verify Units

Confirm your surveyor's units. Easting, Northing, and Elevation are usually in **metres**. You'll set the conversion in the import dialog.

### 2\. Understand Project Base Point vs Survey Point

Georeferenced coordinates often contain huge numbers (e.g. E: 524,310.50). Placing geometry hundreds of kilometres from Archicad's **Project Origin (0,0,0)** causes graphic glitches, clipping, and unreliable snapping. Archicad provides two references:

- **Project Base Point (0,0,0)** — the internal origin; keep your building close to it.
- **Survey Point** — a secondary reference storing real-world coordinates for IFC georeferencing.

**Critical caveat:** The \`Place Mesh from Surveyors' Data\` command **always references the Project Base Point, not the Survey Point.** Even if the Survey Point is configured correctly, imported meshes land relative to (0,0,0). This is confirmed on the [Graphisoft Community forums](https://community.graphisoft.com/t5/Modeling/Importing-Surveyors-Data-into-Archicad/td-p/684066?ref=topographer-com.ghost.io) and has not changed for many versions.

**Workaround:** Pre-offset your XYZ data (subtract the survey origin from every X and Y), or move the mesh manually after import. For origin management background, see the [Archicad Survey Point documentation](https://community.graphisoft.com/t5/Setup-License-articles/Survey-Point-in-Archicad/ta-p/303960?ref=topographer-com.ghost.io).

## Step-by-Step: Place Mesh from Surveyors' Data

### Step 1: Prepare Your XYZ File

Three numeric columns separated by spaces, tabs, semicolons, or commas:

\`\`\`text 524310.50 181200.25 42.50 524312.00 181202.10 42.85 524315.25 181205.00 43.10 \`\`\`

Column order: Easting (X), Northing (Y), Elevation (Z). Header rows like \`X Y Z\` are tolerated — Archicad treats any row with non-numeric data as a comment and skips it. What matters is consistent separators that don't clash with your decimal marker.

### Step 2: Run the Import Command

Open the project in a **Floor Plan** view and go to **File > Interoperability > Place Mesh from Surveyors' Data**. Select your \`.txt\` or \`.xyz\` file (rename \`.csv\` first) and click **Open**.

### Step 3: Configure the Dialog

Archicad asks for three things:

1. **Unit of Measurement** — metres or feet.
2. **Placement** — whether coordinates are absolute or offsets.
3. **Height Above Sea Level** — base elevation reference from \`Options > Project Preferences > Project Location\`.

Click **OK**.

### Step 4: Place the Mesh

Archicad hands you an insertion cursor. **Click on your floor plan to set the insertion point.** The mesh drops relative to wherever you click — not to the Survey Point, and not automatically to Project Origin. Choose (0,0,0), a building corner, or a specific reference marker.

Archicad then generates the 3D Mesh with an elevation node at every point in the file.

## Alternative: Building Terrain from DWG 3D Contours

If your survey arrived as an AutoCAD \`.DWG\` with 3D contour lines:

1. **Merge the DWG** onto a dedicated site story via **File > Interoperability > Merge**.
2. **Verify the contours are truly 3D.** Some surveyors deliver flat 2D lines with elevation *labels*. If Z-values are zero, the Magic Wand will flatten your mesh. Check with the LIST command.
3. **Draw a Mesh Boundary** covering your project area with the Mesh Tool.
4. **Use the Magic Wand:** Hold **Spacebar** and click a 3D contour. In the **Add New Points** dialog, choose **Fit to User Ridges** (smooth interpolation) or **Fit to All Ridges** (also considers triangulation). For clean site models, \`Fit to User Ridges\` is usually right.

## 5 Tips for Optimising Archicad Site Meshes

### 1\. Split Ridge Display Between Plan and 3D

New meshes show every triangular face in both views. Adjust two separate controls in **Mesh Selection Settings** (\`Ctrl+T\` / \`Cmd+T\`):

- **Floor Plan and Section > Outlines > Ridge Selection:** **Show User Defined Ridges**.
- **Model > 3D Appearance:** **All Ridges Smooth**.

Together these give you clean plans and a smooth 3D surface.

### 2\. Clip Data to the Project Boundary

Don't import a 10km × 10km cloud for a 500m² plot. Excess points inflate file size and slow down section generation.

### 3\. Separate Existing Ground from Proposed Grading

Keep the raw import on a locked layer (\`3D Terrain - Existing\`), duplicate to \`3D Terrain - Proposed\`, and use **Solid Element Operations** (\`Design > Solid Element Operations\`) with **Subtraction with Upwards Extrusion** to cut foundations and retaining walls cleanly.

### 4\. Set the IFC Classification to IfcSite

For OpenBIM handoffs: select the Mesh, open **Classification and Properties**, and set the classification to \`IfcSite\`. IFC exports will carry the terrain under the correct spatial hierarchy.

### 5\. Use the Survey Point for IFC Georeferencing Only

Since the surveyors' data command ignores it, don't rely on the Survey Point for import positioning. Use it to store real-world coordinates so IFC exports carry correct georeferencing for civil and GIS workflows.

## FAQ: Importing Terrain into Archicad

**Which file formats can Archicad import for terrain data?** Natively \`.txt\` and \`.xyz\` through \`Place Mesh from Surveyors' Data\`. \`.csv\` files must be renamed to \`.xyz\` first. \`.dwg\` and \`.dxf\` files with 3D contours can be traced with the Mesh Tool's Magic Wand, and \`.ifc\` files containing \`IfcSite\` can be merged directly.

**Why doesn't my imported mesh align with the Survey Point?** \`Place Mesh from Surveyors' Data\` references the Project Base Point (0,0,0), not the Survey Point. Pre-offset your XYZ data or move the mesh manually after import.

**Can I use a comma-separated CSV file directly?** No. Rename it to \`.xyz\` first, and make sure the file doesn't use commas as both field separator and decimal marker.

**How do I hide the internal triangulation lines?** Two settings: \`Show User Defined Ridges\` under Floor Plan and Section, and \`All Ridges Smooth\` under Model > 3D Appearance.

**What's the best way to cut a building footprint into the terrain?** Duplicate the terrain to a \`Proposed\` layer, then use Solid Element Operations with \`Subtraction with Upwards Extrusion\`.
